Janet Porter, PhD
Janet Porter has 40 years of experience as a hospital administrator, teacher, association executive, consultant, and public health leader. She joined Stroudwater Associates in 2012 and serves as a strategy, operational and leadership development consultant to healthcare organizations. Janet served in leadership roles at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, Association of University Programs in Health Administration and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
A popular leadership development speaker, Janet recent presentations include those at AARP, the American College of Healthcare Executives Congress, Kaiser Permanente, the National Patient Safety Foundation, the Cleveland Clinic, the Center to Advance Palliative Care, the Patient Experience Symposium and the Singapore Health Management Congress. Janet has served on the faculties of Harvard University, University of Minnesota, University of Colorado and University of Miami. Janet is currently an adjunct professor teaching healthcare strategy and leadership development at Ohio State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Janet is also faculty co-director of the Institute for Health Improvement’s (IHI) Leading Quality Program. Janet has been a Baldrige examiner and a faculty member in Harvard Medical School’s Palliative Care Leadership program. She has authored over thirty articles and book chapters; Janet was the founding co-author of the national column The Management Moment for the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice and co-authored the book Managing the Public Health Enterprise.
Janet Porter currently serves on the boards of the Beaufort County Library, Hospice Care of the Lowcountry and Hilton Head Hospital; she has been a member of the Foster McGaw Committee for the American Hospital Association for fifteen years. Janet serves on the Stewardship and Community Health committees for Mercy Health. Some of her past board service was with AARP, the Ohio State University, the Wexner Medical the AARP National Policy Council, the World of Children, the Ohio State University Alumni Association, the Commission for Accreditation for Health Management Education (CAHME) and the National Center for Healthcare Leadership. Janet served as a faculty coach for teams at UNC and OSU that won the NAHSE case study competition. Janet served on the Robert Wood Johnson panel of the Future of Public Health. Recent consulting clients include the Mayo Clinic, Boston Children’s Hospital, University of Miami, AARP and Kaiser Permanente.
Janet has a BS and MHA from Ohio State University and an MBA and PhD in healthcare strategy from University of Minnesota. Janet lives in Hilton Head, SC with her husband Jim O’Sullivan.
